Surface, air or express: picking the right mode.

Mode is a choice between cost and transit time. Surface is the default for heavier cargo and most student moves. Air or express is for lighter parcels that need a shorter transit. The booking should show which one matches the weight and the box count on your lane.
Surface
Surface moves by road. It is the right default when the shipment is luggage, a few cartons of household goods, or anything where a day or two of extra transit is cheaper than flying the weight. Heavier chargeable weight is where surface earns its place: you are paying for kilograms and volume, and road absorbs that better than air.
It is also the mode most people should start with when they are not sure. If the delivery date on the quote is acceptable, there is no reason to pay for a faster product.
Air and express
Air and express are for parcels that are light enough to fly and time-sensitive enough to justify it. Documents, a small replacement part, or a carton that has to reach before a fixed date belong here. A bulky light box can still price on volumetric weight, so “light” means chargeable weight, not how the carton feels when you lift it.
Express is not a sticker you add after booking. It is a product with its own rate and its own transit. If you need it, choose it while the quote is on screen.
How AtlasShip assigns it
The partner network assigns Delhivery surface or express from the weight, the number of boxes, and whether the lane is serviceable. You do not open a second account to switch modes. You still get one waybill and one place to track.
Use this order when you are deciding:
- Check that both pincodes are serviceable
- Use chargeable weight, not the weight you hoped for
- Take surface when the quoted delivery date is enough
- Take air or express when the date is not
- Re-quote if you change carton size, because volume can flip the rate
A faster mode does not fix a bad address or a missed pickup window. Someone still has to be at the door within 24 to 48 hours of booking, excluding Sundays and public holidays.
The rate calculator is the decision. Enter the real carton. If surface meets the date, book surface. If it does not, compare express before you pay, not after the box is at the hub.

Booked the first carton from one login. The quote showed the extra charge before we paid.

Useful when the lane changes. A single carrier contract is still simpler when the route never does.
