Sending documents abroad: what customs needs.

International document shipments need a clear description, a declared value, and the receiver’s full address before the pickup is booked. Customs reads what you wrote. A vague line such as “papers” or “gifts” is how a document shipment gets held.
What to prepare
Write what the documents are: a university transcript, a signed contract, a passport copy. State the value even when the paper itself is not goods for sale. Use the receiver’s full name, phone, street, city, postal code, and country. An address that would fail a domestic booking will fail faster once it has left India.
Keep the documents in a pouch you can identify. Do not mix them with undeclared items in the same carton. If the contents might need a commercial invoice, ask support before you book. Adding paperwork after the shipment is in transit is the slow version of this task.
What not to put in the envelope
Documents are not a way to send items that cannot fly. Hazardous material, currency, jewellery, medicines without the right papers, and anything a carrier lists as prohibited do not become acceptable because they are flat. If a prohibited item is found, the shipment can be confiscated and the booking is not refunded.
Originals you cannot replace deserve a conversation before they are handed to a pickup executive. Ask whether the lane accepts that document type, and keep a copy.
How this differs from a domestic booking
A domestic shipment is a weight category, two Indian pincodes, and a waybill. An international document shipment adds customs data on top of that. You still pack so the piece survives sorting, and you still need someone at the pickup address. The extra work is the declaration.
- Description that names the documents
- Declared value
- Receiver name, phone, and full international address
- Commercial invoice, if support says the contents need one
- No undeclared goods in the same piece
If you are unsure whether the contents are “documents” or “goods”, treat them as goods and ask before pickup. The wrong category is a delay, not a wording preference.
Domestic lanes can be quoted on the pricing page. For an international document pickup, start with support so the paperwork matches the lane, then book only when the description and the address are both complete.

Booked the first carton from one login. The quote showed the extra charge before we paid.

Useful when the lane changes. A single carrier contract is still simpler when the route never does.
